I love new year. Everything feels fresh, everything feels new, everything feels possible. It is like in a new year, you can start anew, and you can do anything. We make big bad statements, resolutions and promises to ourselves and others.
Then life starts up again, we get busy with kids, and work, and family and friends, and the easy old habits, that we know are not getting us where we want to go, come back again, and we are back at square one.
Thats the less fun part about new years.
So what can we do to make that a little different?
Well these five tips will help you make the most of those amazing goals and plans for 2016.
The more clear and concise you are about what you want, the easier it is to stay on track, and motivated, to achieve it. Think about it. If you want to “loose weight” or “be healthier”, what exactly does that mean? How much weight. Healthier in what way.
If, however, you want to loose 10kg, well thats easy to see, measure and make a plan for. Its easier to stick to, giving you the best chance to succeed.
If your clear on what you want, REALLY want, its time to become obsessive about it. People who have become masters at changing their life have become obsessed about that change, about making their life everything they want it to be.They look at their goals, their plans and how to make it work. They read over their goals daily (or more), they schedule the actions so that they happen, they love to learn how to make them a reality.
Put up reminders everywhere, read what you want to achieve, plan how it can happen, and do what has to be done to get it all in line. Become obsessed about being the best version of yourself.
Make a plan
Most great things don’t happen by accident. Most people don’t get fitter, healthier or leaner by wishing it. They need to take action (more on this in a minute). But what actions should you take?
Well most of us know that to come degree already. If you want to be healthier and leaner, eat better, exercise more often, maybe even make sure your spine and nervous system is functioning at its best (more on that in a minute). But having a plan is key to allowing you to schedule it, and make it happen.
Now this can be a double edged sword, spending so much time in planning that nothing happens. So make a basic plan, GET STARTED, and see what results you achieve. No one said you had to stick to the one plan, especially when its not getting the results you wanted, but most people find that the worst plan executed well will trump the best plan executed poorly. So get started, and change tack if needed.
Here is where the rubber hits the road, and change can really happen. Few few people have wished their way to success (no matter how you choose to define it), they have taken consistent and ongoing action. be it reading more, eating better, exercising more, meditating more, spending more and better time with their kids. They DID THE WORK.
As my gym instructor says, no one got fit standing in a gym, they got fit by the WORK they did while they were there.
The bigger your dreams, the bigger the action you need. So work that plan hard, see the results, and adjust accordingly. But never stop doing the work.
Look after yourself too
Sometimes in the pursuit of success, we forget to look after ourselves. We might sleep too little, we might get burt out. We might even forget to do the preventative maintenance that our body needs (like regular chiropractic checks).
Now this is especially to you if you are aiming to get into shape for the new year. You are going to move more. You might even be lifting some weights, and pushing your body more than normal (I mean you have to if you want that change right). So you will be needing to look after yourself more than normal. I am sure none of you have aimed for an injury in the new year, right?
So if you are seeing me (or another chiropractor), let them know what you are doing, how you are doing it, and we can keep the best track of your progress, so you can get the best of all that training.
If you are not seeing a chiropractor yet, maybe its time to get a NeuroStructural Chiropractic analysis, so you can be sure you are giving yourself the best chance to succeed.
No matter what your plans are for the new year, I hope you have a healthy, joyful and fulfilling 2016, for you and your loved ones.
